In celebration of International Women’s Day, we’re proud to announce that Julie Adam, SVP, Radio, has received a leadership excellence award for being a diversity champion from Women in Communication & Technology (WCT). Women in Communications and Technology is a not-for-profit association of women who work in the communications, digital media and technology sectors.
We caught up with Julie about this award:
What does this award mean to you?
It’s a very humbling experience being recognized with a leadership award. It’s important to recognize what it means to have a leadership role. It makes me very proud to receive this honour.
Any advice for allies of gender equality?
Allow room in your leadership style to morph with your team’s style. People like to receive information in different ways; be flexible. I don’t think there is a secret to having a diverse team. I think you just have to make the commitment to do it. A diverse team is a stronger team.
How is Rogers doing with building a diverse workforce?
The company is making a concerted effort to recognize women & diversity overall. I think Rick Brace is a real leader here – have a look at his MBU SLT – which has a ton of women on it!
Who was the most influential person in your career?
My dad was my best friend and confidant and encouraged me to follow my passions. As a father of six, five of which were girls, he challenged gender stereotypes in raising us when it wasn’t common to do so. He raised us as individuals, not simply as boys or girls. I try to do the same with my kids (both are boys). When it comes to being a good leader, he taught me that while you have to be tough, the key is to also be kind and honest.
