Rogers secures new 5G spectrum in every province and territory

Rogers is proud to announce today that we invested $1.7 billion in Canada’s first 5G auction to build a national 5G network for Canadians.

600 MHz wireless spectrum is a critical foundation to deploy 5G technology across our country’s vast landscape, and our new 20-year licenses are an important building block towards the exciting 5G future we are creating.

“This 5G spectrum is a precious and scarce resource that will benefit Canadians and Canadian businesses across the country,” said Joe Natale, President and Chief Executive Officer, Rogers Communications.

This new spectrum band is vital because it carries wireless data across long distances and through dense urban buildings. This creates more consistent and higher quality coverage in both remote areas and smart cities. This also creates amazing opportunities for businesses across the country that rely on real-time data, including farming, mining, manufacturing and transportation.

Overall, we invested $1.71 per MHz/POP to acquire 52 of 64 of the 600 MHz spectrum licenses available to us. This includes all available blocks in Southern and Northern Ontario, Northern Quebec, Atlantic Canada, Manitoba and all three territories.

Rogers has led the way through every major network technology evolution, and this new spectrum will be combined with future 3500 MHz and millimetre wave spectrum to create a global best-in-class 5G network across Canada.

This new investment will bring our planned total capital investment in infrastructure to $4.7 billion in 2019. Rogers has invested over $29 billion to build its national wireless network.
