CAMROSE, AB (January 21, 2018) Bringing a close to six days of world-class competition at the Encana Arena, Team Carey (Calgary) and Team De Cruz (Geneva, Switzerland) have claimed their first career Grand Slam titles at the Meridian Canadian Open in Camrose, AB.

In women’s action, Team Carey captured their first Grand Slam championship with a decisive 10-5 victory over Team Englot (Winnipeg) on Sunday afternoon. Along with the title, Team Carey collects $30,000 of the $125,000 women’s purse and qualifies for the Humpty’s Champions Cup, the final Grand Slam event of the season.

“It’s pretty incredible,” skip Chelsea Carey said. “These events are the pinnacle of the best field in the world. To come out of a field like this, and to come out on top is huge.”

In men’s competition, Team De Cruz edged out reigning European Champion Team Edin (Karlstad, Sweden) 5-3. The Swiss Olympic team collects $30,000 of the $125,000 men’s purse and secure a berth in the Humpty’s Champions Cup in April.

“Incredible, like actually unbelievable,” said skip Peter De Cruz. “When we qualified, we knew we had two really tough games to make the final and then, playing the No. 1 team in the world. I think they outplayed us in the first half and then we just started to put rocks in places that made their game a little more complicated and we just got a little lucky in the end. “

The 2017-18 Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling season resumes with the Princess Auto Elite 10 beginning Thursday, March 15 at the St. James Civic Centre in Winnipeg. The fifth of seven events on the Grand Slam calendar, the Princess Auto Elite 10 will feature 10 top tier men’s teams from around the world.
