The future is here – 5G will change the way Canadians work, live and play

Buzz around 5G is at an all-time high with Apple unveiling its flagship 5G devices, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max this week. And here at Rogers, we just doubled the size of our 5G network by expanding to 66 new towns and cities, making 5G available to customers in 130 communities across Canada.

So, we know that 5G is here in towns and cities across the country – but what does it all mean?

What is 5G?

Fifth generation, or 5G, will be the most transformative technology offered since wireless services were introduced in 1985. It is the latest generation in wireless network technology that over time will deliver unprecedented speed, instant response times and reliable, far-reaching connections, that will fundamentally change how we work, live and play.

What can 5G do?

As 5G continues to advance and develop, it will offer unprecedented speeds, support up to 10x more capacity per square km, be capable of peak data rates of up to 100x faster, and drastically reduce response times in comparison to past wireless networks. The near-instant connections and incredibly fast download speeds will help make more possible for Canadians across the country by supporting applications and solutions that can transform industries, drive our economy forward, and improve everyday life for Canadians. Over time, 5G will power new applications and solutions, including:

  • Healthcare – With 5G-enabled devices, doctors will be able to conduct real-time monitoring for patients in remote areas, and complete remote surgeries with 5G-enabled robotics
  • Food and Agriculture – Better food and produce production via wireless sensors that monitor soil conditions, saving farmers time and money
  • Gaming – Online gaming will be taken to the next level with things like multi-player, lag-free gaming on the go that relies primarily on cloud storage – no downloads needed!
  • Video Calling – With 5G’s fast, stable, and reliable connectivity and speed, video calling will be seamless, in high definition, so you’re connected with more of your loved ones at once and never miss the big moments.

How can I use it?

With more and more 5G devices becoming available, like the Google Pixel 5, Google Pixel 4a (5G), Samsung Galaxy S20 5G series and Galaxy Note20 5G series, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, LG Velvet 5G and the Motorola Edge+, a growing 5G network across Canada, and new applications being built, 5G is getting closer to becoming an everyday reality for Canadians.

With customers eager to get their hands on these smartphones, we’re excited to share that pre-order for iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 is now open for Rogers customers, with availability beginning Friday, October 23. Customers will be able to order iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 mini beginning on November 6, with availability on November 13. iPhone 12 models will also be available on Fido.

And now, with Rogers 5G offering more than 10x the coverage than any other carrier[i], the promise of 5G will help turn dreams into a reality for so many Canadians from coast-to-coast-to-coast.
