Black History Month – Sitting down with NHL® stars Darnell Nurse, Anthony Duclair, Mathieu Joseph & Givani Smith

As we continue to honour and celebrate Black History Month today and beyond, we’re shining a light on the meaningful contributions of Black Canadians throughout our history. We sat down with NHL® stars Darnell Nurse, Anthony Duclair, Mathieu Joseph & Givani Smith to learn more about what this month means to them. 


Darnell Nurse

Defenceman, Edmonton Oilers® 


Born and raised in Hamilton, ON, Darnell Nurse was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Today, he shares the significance of Black History Month for himself and his community.


Anthony Duclair

Forward, Florida Panthers® 


Hailing from Laval, Quebec, Anthony Duclair has played 8 seasons in the NHL® since he was drafted by the New York Rangers in 2013. Today, he plays forward for the Florida Panthers®. Anthony shares with us how he celebrates Black History Month in his everyday life.  


Mathieu Joseph

Forward, Tampa Bay Lightning® 


Mathieu Joseph was also born and raised in Laval, Quebec. In 2015, he was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning® and hasn’t looked back since. Today, he shares how his lived experiences have influenced his perspective on Black History Month.  


Givani Smith

Forward, Detroit Red Wings® 


Born and raised in Toronto, ON, Givani Smith was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings® in 2016. Today, Givani shares the meaning of Black History Month and how he honours this history year-round.
