January 16, 2023 – Hockey brings Canadians together unlike any other shared experience. While team allegiances ignite local rivalries and fierce competition in communities across the country, the essence of the sport weaves a common thread that unites us all. This Saturday, January 21, Sportsnet celebrates that bond with the 23rd annual Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada – Canada’s biggest single-day hockey celebration featuring all seven Canadian NHL teams in action.
The puck drops at 11 a.m. ET / 8 a.m. PT on Sportsnet with Team Scotiabank facing off against Team adidas as part of the PWHPA’s Secret® Dream Gap Tour, featuring marquee players such as Rebecca Johnston and Blayre Turnbull representing Team Scotiabank, and Sarah Nurse and Kendall Coyne Schofield playing for Team adidas.
The NHL then takes centre stage as the Tampa Bay Lightning visit the Calgary Flames at 3 p.m. ET / Noon PT on Sportsnet & CBC, followed by the Winnipeg Jets vs. Ottawa Senators on Sportsnet West, Sportsnet ONE, and Citytv, while the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens renew their Original Six rivalry on Sportsnet and CBC, both at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT. The marathon celebration concludes on the west coast with the Edmonton Oilers vs. Vancouver Canucks in a Pacific Division battle at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT on Sportsnet and CBC. The complete Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada broadcast can also be streamed live on SN NOW. For a limited time, fans can purchase a 6 month pass to SN NOW PREMIUM, Canada’s premier sports streaming service, at a discounted rate.
In addition to English-language coverage, Hockey Night in Canada: Punjabi Edition will air Maple Leafs vs. Canadiens and Oilers vs. Canucks on OMNI, while Hockey Night in Canada in Cree will broadcast Oilers vs. Canucks on APTN. Full schedule below.
Ron MacLean hosts Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada live from Harrison Park’s Good Cheer Rink and the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre in Owen Sound, ON, where a women’s OUA matchup featuring the Waterloo Warriors vs. Guelph Gryphons, followed by the OHL’s Peterborough Petes vs. Owen Sound Attack, provide a fitting backdrop for the broadcast. Joining MacLean and the NHL on Sportsnet broadcast crew, and representing the host community of Owen Sound, are NHL and Owen Sound Attack alumnus Bobby Ryan, and former Owen Sound Attack GM, Mike Futa. Other special guests include Scotiabank Teammates Cassie Campbell-Pascall, Lanny McDonald, Wendel Clark, Victoria Bach, Blayre Turnbull, and Darcy Tucker.
Throughout the day-long celebration, Sportsnet will share powerful stories of communities coming together in the most Canadian way – through hockey:
- For more than 25 years, Hockey Helps The Homeless has rallied players from the beer leagues to the big leagues for a great cause. Rebecca Johnston, Olympic Champion and Calgary Flames Player & Grassroots Hockey Developer, shows how the charitable organization’s day-long pro-am tournaments have raised more than $20 million for local shelters and other groups dedicated to serving homeless Canadians.
- Cameron Lizotte had already skated at a Toronto Maple Leafs rookie camp and was on his way to winning an OHL Championship before he found his true calling. He undeniably loved hockey, but the creativity and individuality of fashion design allowed Lizotte to show a different side of himself. His fashion label, Atelier Coin – a nod to the giant nickel atop his hometown, Sudbury – has been featured at Paris Fashion Week.
- Sportsnet’s Christine Simpson discovers how the George Bell Hockey Association, a not-for-profit community organization in West Toronto, helps many experience the greatness of hockey through acts of kindness, including a Ugandan mom and her children who are beneficiaries of the GBHA initiative.
- Arber Xhekaj was undrafted in both the OHL and NHL, but now finds himself starring for the Montreal Canadiens at the age of 21. The Hamilton native’s story is one of grit and perseverance – traits learned from his parents, Simona and Jack, who both left difficult situations in their respective homelands of Czechoslovakia and Albania to start a new life in Canada.
