From satellite to latest in 5G – Rogers wraps up another year at Mobile World Congress

As part of our commitment to bringing Canadians the biggest and best networks, Rogers once again had a strong presence at the 2024 Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.

This is the industry’s largest and most influential event, brining together wireless operators, equipment and smartphone manufacturers, and software providers from around the globe. It’s a great opportunity for our team to get a first-hand look at next-generation technology and innovations to inform our technology strategy and roadmap.

Working together on next-generation technology solutions

The Rogers team met with our global partners, who are helping us bring the best and latest technology to Canada. The team sat down with SpaceX and Lynk Global to talk about advancing satellite-to-mobile phone coverage in Canada in 2024. They also connected with Ericsson, our 5G vendor, to learn about leading global network solutions and opportunities that build on our work together to complete Canada’s first nationwide live test of 5G network slicing.

Advancing APIs

With the expansion of 5G around the world, the evolution of APIs were widely discussed at MWC. Rogers is working with industry leaders to advance APIs and support the development of network-aware applications. Microsoft unveiled its new Azure Programmable Connectivity, a global API platform and Rogers is Microsoft’s first Canadian partner.

As a founding member of the 5G Future Forum (5GFF), Rogers also participated in the development of a whitepaper presented at MWC, which explores Bi-Direction APIs. This new approach will help developers go to market faster with more innovative and resilient network-aware applications.

Winning awards on global stage

Finally, our Chief Technology and Information Office, Ron McKenzie, picked up umlaut’s 2023 “Best in Test” award. umlaut ranked Rogers as the number one Canadian wireless carrier for the fifth consecutive year – recognition of our work to deliver world-class networks and keeping Canadians connected whenever and wherever they are.

The team looks forward to attending next year’s MWC.
