New survey: Canadians may not actually be working from “home”

John Krasinski works remotely using Rogers 5G network in funny new video

Toronto, July 26, 2024 – Almost half of all Canadians who have worked remotely from either a cottage or another city have used a background filter to disguise they’re not at home, a new survey shows.

The research, commissioned by Rogers, is brought to life in the company’s new video featuring John Krasinski in a virtual meeting with his agent pretending to work from home. During the exchange, a seagull flies into view and breaks the virtual background, revealing that John is actually on a boat streaming the video call on the Rogers 5G network.

“As we developed the campaign, we wanted to tap into experiences our customers can really relate to,” said Terrie Tweddle, Chief Brand and Communications Officer, Rogers. “Remote work, especially during the summer, is a very real and relatable scenario for Canadians.”

The survey of Canadian hybrid workers also found 25% of managers have suspected an employee of disguising their location when working remotely in the last year, and two-thirds of Canadians who have worked remotely in a different location other than their home don’t always tell their colleagues they’re not at home.

The video is part of Rogers new 5G campaign featuring Krasinski. In the launch ad, he’s lip syncing and dancing to “Shake It Off (Taylor’s Version)” as he’s streaming music on a lake in cottage country.

The campaign features seasonally relevant messages including “Work from the cottage,” “Stream by the lake,” or “Take your show on the road,” on Canada’s largest and most reliable 5G network.

The survey of full-time employees who work remotely at least one day per week was conducted in English and French by Sago between July 6 and 15, 2024. The sample size was 1,272 with a margin of error of ±3%
