Sportsnet Celebrates the History of Hockey with the 17th Annual Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada, Feb. 18

 

TORONTO (February 13, 2017) Sportsnet is heading to the shores of the Lake of the Woods this Saturday to celebrate the 17th annual Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada – Canada’s biggest single-day hockey celebration. Hosted live from Kenora, ON, the 13.5-hour marathon broadcast features four must-see matchups with all seven of Canada’s NHL teams in action, beginning at Noon ET / 9 a.m. PT on Sportsnet, CBC, Rogers NHL GameCentre LIVE and Sportsnet NOW.

Celebrating the spirit of tradition and history, Ron MacLean will be on the ground in Kenora to host the day’s festivities alongside several guests, including Don Cherry and NHL alumni Wendel Clark, Lanny McDonald, Mark Napier, Mike Richards, Rick St. Croix, Bryan Trottier and Darcy Tucker. Winnipeg Jets chairman Mark Chipman, two-time Olympic gold medallist Cassie Campbell-Pascall and Sportsnet Central’s Ken Reid will also make appearances throughout the day.

During the broadcast, Sportsnet will shine the spotlight on several stories that represent the important role that tradition and history play in Canada’s national pastime. Features include:

  • Calgary Flames star Johnny Gaudreau gives back to a young fan and his family after losing their home in the Fort McMurray wildfire
  • Before his salute at Jets games made him a household name in Winnipeg, World War II veteran Len Kropioski was already a hero in his hometown of Kenora
  • Sportsnet’s Jim Hughson describes how history and tradition are at the very core of hockey in Canada
  • From Kenora to the big leagues, Sportsnet takes an in-depth look at the path that took hometown hero Mike Richards to the NHL and two Stanley Cup championships

In addition to the Kenora festivities, Sportsnet will also take a look at celebrations happening from coast-to-coast. Locations include:

  • Pownal, P.E.I.Sportsnet Central’s Faizal Khamisa celebrates alongside 180 minor league teams at the Pownal ‘A’ Hockey Tournament
  • CFB Borden – Caroline Cameron of Sportsnet Central visits the Armed Forces at CFB Borden in Ontario
  • ReginaSportsnet Central host Carly Agro is on the ground celebrating alongside hockey fans at the Regina Prairie Cup
  • Cranbrook, BC – Tara Slone gives viewers a sneak peek at the Rogers Hometown Hockey celebrations taking place on Baker Street

 Canadian hockey fans can visit Sportsnet.ca/hockeyday and use the hashtag #HockeyDay to join the conversation and connect to other fans coast-to-coast.

This year’s Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada marks the 17th edition of the national celebration. In addition to the broadcast, this year’s festivities in Kenora include a Stanley Cup Tour, the Opening Face-off presentation, “The Music of Hockey” concert, the Kenora Thistles and NHL Alumni Game, a visit from the official NHL Centennial Truck Tour, hockey clinics, and more.
