2024 was full of memorable events, but which ones captivated Canadians the most? As the year comes to a close, here’s a look back at the Top 10 most shared moments on Rogers 5G network.
“As Canada’s largest and most reliable 5G network provider, we want to make sure customers can share the moment, whether it’s at a Taylor Swift concert or a rare experience like the total darkness of the solar eclipse,” said Mark Kennedy, Chief Technology Officer. “The most shared moments on our 5G network total almost 100 million megabytes and we are investing to stay ahead as demand for data continues to grow.”
Entertainment Takes Top Spot
Today’s concert experience isn’t just about listening to an artist – fans want to livestream and share the moment in real-time. 5G technology makes this possible and this year, concerts take top spot.
Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour was arguably the biggest cultural phenomenon of 2024 so it’s no surprise her shows took the top two spots. Her six concerts in Toronto used a whopping 42TB of data and in Vancouver, 32TB was used in just three nights. Combined, that’s the equivalent of streaming her entire music catalogue more than 63,000 times. Coming in next was Diljit Dosanjh’s July concert in Toronto where fans of the award-winning Punjabi singer used 5.38TB of data.
Sports Close Behind
Canadians love their sports, with four sports moments making this year’s Top 10. The 111th Grey Cup took the top sports moment with 3.95TB of data consumed on Rogers 5G network at BC Place, the equivalent of streaming the game’s halftime performance by the Jonas Brothers almost 9,000 times, followed closely by the Toronto Blue Jays home opener with 3.1TB of data.
As a hockey nation, this was a special year with a Canadian team in the NHL 2024 Stanley Cup Finals. Edmonton Oiler fans shared all the ups and downs of a Stanley Cup run and came in seventh spot with 3.06TB across three nights on the Rogers Place 5G network. Rounding out the year in the tenth spot, fans at the critical Game 7 of the Western Conference Final between Vancouver and Edmonton at Vancouver’s Rogers Arena used 1.53TB.
Canadians Also Shared Once-in-a-Lifetime Event
2024 wasn’t just a year for sports and entertainment, Canadians also got to witness a Total Solar Eclipse. Crowds congregated along the path of totality for this once-in-a-lifetime experience and three cities that experienced total darkness rose to the top for most data usage during the eclipse. Montreal took the top spot with 3.68TB, and eclipse spectators in Niagara Falls and Kingston rounded out the list with 2.83TB and 2.32TB. Together, that’s the equivalent of sharing 184,000 photos of the eclipse.
