Veteran TV columnist Bill Brioux shares his top picks to celebrate Mother’s Day with Ignite TV

By BILL BRIOUX

In honour of Mother’s Day, it is time to salute all the moms who helped raise us on television.

Here are, in my humble opinion and in no particular order, the Top 10 TV Moms of all time. You can catch up on your favourite episodes this Mother’s Day and beyond by saying the name of the actor or the tv show into your Rogers Ignite TV voice remote.

Marge Simpson (voiced by Julie Kavner) on The Simpsons (available on FX, Much, MyNetworkTV, and noovo). Not only does she have to deal with  rambunctious 10-year-old Bart, but she also has to endure her  immature husband Homer — for 700 episodes and counting. Ay caramba!

Vivian Banks (Janet Hubert; Daphne Maxwell Reid), The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (available on Crave). Aunt Viv was such a force in the Banks’ household it took two actresses to play her. Star Will Smith recently patched things up with original actress Hubert on a reunion special.

Mrs. Yong-mi Kim, a.k.a. “Umma” (Jean Yoon) on Kim’s Convenience (available on CBC and Netflix). The family matriarch iss hardworking, kind and certainly patient when it comes to her husband “Appa.” Someday she’ll stop worrying about trying to fix her daughter Janet up with a suitor from her church.

Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) on Game of Thrones (available on Crave), deserves to be on the list for raising fire-breathing dragons. And you thought Marge Simpson had a handful with her progeny.

Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen), Modern Family (available on Citytv). The mother of Haley, Alex and Luke iss even more overwhelmed with her man-child at home – husband/amateur magician Phil (Ty Burrell).

Dr. Rainbow “Bow” Johnson (Tracee Ellis Ross), black.ish (available on Citytv). This busy anesthesiologist and mom grounds this TV family. As the matriarch of the family, she combines humour while juggling real-life issues.

Debbie “Ma” Wolowitz (voiced by Carol Ann Susi) on The Big Bang Theory (available on Crave), is the least-visible mom but still manages to make an impact with her voice.Often heard shouting through the walls at her son Howard (Simon Helberg), who still helps each morning with her wig and makeup in exchange for getting his meat cut up.

Bonnie Plunkett (Allison Janney), Mom (available on Citytv ). She isn’t really there much when her daughter Christy (Anna Faris) is growing up, but she moves back in with her as an adult to be there every twelve steps of the way.

Moira Rose (Catherine O’Hara) on Schitt’s Creek (available on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video). The most eccentric mom on this list makes of laugh with her brutal honesty and distinctive accent. The SCTV veteran is the only actress to have won the Golden Globe, Emmy, Canadian Screen Award, Screen Actor’s Guild Award, and the TCA Award all in the same season.

Lydia Margarita del Carmen Inclán Maribona Leyte-Vidal de Riera (Rita Moreno), One Day at a Time (available on Netflix). Everyone’s favourite abuela with a larger than life personality who at 90, steals every scene. Plus, she’s the  with the only EGOT winner on this list.
