Volunteering to support evacuees from the East Prairie Métis Settlement in Alberta

When Rogers employee Kelly Chalifoux heard that residents from the East Prairie Métis Settlement in northern Alberta had been evacuated from their homes due to devastating wildfires, he knew he wanted to help.

In his role with the Rogers Indigenous Collaboration team, Kelly works closely with Indigenous communities in northern Alberta and sits on the High Prairie Native Friendship Centres Board.  The community opened its kitchen to feed evacuees from the nearby Métis Settlement and provided clean, donated clothing in a boardroom they turned into a thrift store.

Kelly volunteered to help sort and fold clothing to ensure the families who escaped the fires with nothing, had clean clothes to wear. Both of Kelly’s parents are from Indigenous communities near the East Prairie Métis Settlement, making his volunteer efforts even more personally impactful.

We are grateful to employees like Kelly who are making a meaningful impact by giving back to their communities.

Rogers together with Shaw is committed to keeping customers connected to critical resources and loved ones, while contributing to immediate disaster relief efforts.

We are matching donations to the Canadian Red Cross 2023 Alberta Fires Appeal up to $1 million. Canadians can donate by texting the word ROGERS to 20222 to make a $5 donation to the appeal which will be matched by Rogers or any amount by visiting the campaign page. The Government of Canada and Government of Alberta have announced they will match all donations to the Appeal, meaning every $1 donated through our match will become $4.

We are waiving Canadian long-distance, SMS and data overage charges for impacted Rogers, Fido and Shaw customers from May 4, 2023, until customers return home. Shaw internet, landline phone and television customers who experience loss of service or are evacuated will be proactively credited during the period they cannot access their services.

We have also opened up the Shaw Go WiFi network to all affected communities and evacuation centres where available, so impacted residents can stay connected regardless of carrier. To learn more about Rogers together with Shaw’s support efforts in Alberta, please click here
