Another Season Draws to an End: Team Homan and Team Gushue Capture the Humpty’s Champions Cup Title in Calgary
CALGARY (April 29, 2018) Bringing a close to the 2017-18 Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling series and a historic curling season, Team Homan (Ottawa) and Team Gushue (St. John’s, NL) have captured Humpty’s Champions Cup titles in Calgary.
In women’s competition, Team Homan claimed its second consecutive Humpty’s Champions Cup title following a 7-6 victory over Tour Challenge Tier II winners Team Einarson (Winnipeg). Along with the final Grand Slam title of the season, Team Homan takes home $40,000 of the $125,000 women’s purse and qualifies for the 2019 Humpty’s Champions Cup event in Saskatoon, SK.
“It’s been a great season,” said skip Rachel Homan. “We’ve achieved a lot of goals and fell short of a couple, but that’s sports. We rallied back and found a way to grind out the wins here and to win another championship here is really exciting for our team.”
In men’s action, Team Gushue captured its first Humpty’s Champions Cup crown and 10th career Grand Slam title following an 8-2 victory over four-time world champion Team Howard (Tiny, ON). In addition to the title, Team Gushue collects $40,000 of the $125,000 men’s purse and a berth in next season’s Humpty’s Champions Cup tournament.
“I’m just super proud of our team with the way we played,” said skip Brad Gushue. “Glenn was vintage Glenn there for five ends. He made some great shots and we kept applying the pressure and got a miss there in the sixth that broke the game open. That was fun. It was a fun day.”
The Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling tour returns for the 2018-19 season with a historic Princess Auto Elite 10 event in Chatham, ON, September 26-30. Traditionally an event exclusive to the top 10 men’s teams, the 2018 Princess Auto Elite 10 will mark the first time the world’s best 10 women’s teams will also compete in the tournament.
