New Rogers survey finds one in four Quebecers call Moving Day “outdated,” more than half of recent movers now purposely avoid July 1
MONTREAL, June 29, 2026 – From balconies stacked with boxes to moving trucks snaking through Montreal streets, Moving Day remains a Quebec ritual. But a new Rogers survey finds the tradition is starting to buckle under modern expectations.
More than one-quarter of Quebecers (26%) now call Moving Day an outdated but unavoidable reality, with nearly as many (24%) calling it a major annual source of stress. And more than half (53%) of those who moved in the past seven years deliberately chose a different moving date to avoid the July 1 chaos, the survey found.
Quebecers’ relationship with Moving Day has always been part folklore, part endurance sport. Yet the tradition is showing its age: only 28% say the day feels the same as before, while 19% call it more chaotic and 14% see it as disruptive.
Moving Day checklist: movers, keys and WiFi
When Quebecers picture a successful Moving Day, connectivity is now on the list:
- 96% say movers or helpers showing up on time is important
- 95% want the move to stay on schedule
- 94% need on-time access to their new home
- 64% now say home internet up-and-running at the new address is essential, a non-existent metric a generation ago
What Quebecers expect from internet setup on Moving Day
That pressure is especially clear when it comes to home internet. While two-thirds (64%) of Quebecers say having it up and running at their new address is essential, the reality of July 1 often misses the mark: it falls on a statutory holiday, demand is intense, and technician appointments can fill quickly. As a result, 53% expect a 1-2 day wait and 11% expect three days or more.
“Moving Day is part of Quebec’s reality, but life has changed since the tradition began,” said Edith Cloutier, Rogers Quebec President. “Today, the first box may not even be unpacked before people need to get online for work, school, streaming, deliveries or staying connected with family. With Rogers 5G Home Internet, movers can self-install and get online in minutes, making home internet one less thing to worry about on July 1.”
The Moving Day Reliability Index: who Quebecers count on most
Among Quebecers who recently moved on July 1, the survey shows who and what they find to be the most reliable.
Friends and family top the most reliable list at 76%, followed by mobile service (72%), professional movers (63%), building managers and landlords (58%), and home internet setup (57%). Online buyers and sellers rank last at 42%.

About the survey
The online survey was conducted using the Léger Opinion panel and fielded among 1,000 Quebec residents aged 18 and over, in English and French, between May 26 and June 2, 2026. The methodology notes that, because the survey uses a non-probability online sample, a margin of error cannot technically be applied. However, for comparison purposes, a probability sample of n=1000 respondents would carry a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
