What made you get involved in the Rogers Employee Volunteer Program?
I am so proud to work for a company that even offers something like this. Why not get involved? A free day to give back to the community, or in my case, a cause that is extremely personal and important to me – it’s a no brainer!
What did you do for your day-of-giving and did anyone join you?
I co-chair a golf tournament alongside my dad and uncle in memory of my late mom. We raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer Canada, and a specific research fund we started at Princess Margaret Hospital six years ago when she passed away. Many of my co-workers and friends came out to support and volunteered their own time for the day as they do year after year.
Tell us what your day was like!
It was a crazy hectic day – as it is every year. So much planning goes into it prior to the day. To see your work come to fruition is very satisfying. The day begins with morning registration. We sell tickets for draws and a silent auction. Lunch is served along with player loot bags, and then the golfers head out to the green. As they tee off, volunteers prepare for the night’s festivities. We have approximately 15 superstar volunteers that run the show. They man the prize holes, including a $10,000 cash prize and a car giveaway. They distribute food and water when necessary, set up silent/live auction, and step in to crisis manage all last minute curveballs. The evening is filled with speeches from our partners at Pancreatic Cancer Canada, and Ruth Farb’s family members.
What was your favourite moment during your volunteer experience?
The end of the night when I was able to take in what a success the event was and realize that we surpassed our fundraising goal by a large margin.
Did you take away anything valuable from the experience?
Supporting an important cause – surrounded by the people who mean the most to you – is the absolute best feeling in the world!
