TORONTO (April 15, 2018) Bringing a close to six days of world-class competition at Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre, Team Koe (Calgary) and Team Sinclair (Blaine, USA) have captured the Players’ Championship titles in Toronto.

In men’s competition, Team Koe claimed its first Grand Slam title of the season with a 6-2 victory over reigning world champion Team Edin (Karlstad, Sweden). With the win, Team Koe takes home $30,000 of the $150,000 men’s purse and secures a berth in the Humpty’s Champions Cup, the final Grand Slam event of the season.

“I could feel a little bit of adrenaline today, and was just happy to be able to have this opportunity to be with the boys,” said third Marc Kennedy, who will be stepping away from curling at the end of the season. “We’ve had an incredible four-year run. I know we have one more event, but [the Players’ Championship] was the big one we wanted to win.”

In women’s action, Team Sinclair became the first American team to capture a Grand Slam title following a convincing 7-2 victory over defending Players’ Championship winners Team Jones (Winnipeg). Along with the title, Team Sinclair collects $30,000 of the $150,000 women’s purse and qualifies for the Humpty’s Champions Cup in Calgary.

“I’m a little bit in shock, I’m not going to lie,” said skip Jamie Sinclair. “I just can’t believe it. Everything just seemed to fall in place for us this week. We played really well all week, and couldn’t be more proud of the team for how we worked on and off the ice this week.”

Team Koe and Team Sinclair also finished in second place in the Bonus Cup race, claiming an additional $40,000 each. Team Jones and Team Gushue (St. John’s, NL) captured the first-place prize, winning $75,000 respectively.

The 2017-18 Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling season concludes later this month with the Humpty’s Champions Cup, beginning Tuesday, April 24 at the WinSport Arena at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary. The seventh and final event on the Grand Slam calendar, the Humpty’s Champions Cup will showcase the 30 most successful men’s and women’s teams of the season.
