Yellowknife to Host 20th Annual Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada in 2020, on Sportsnet
TORONTO (June 1, 2019) The Northern Lights will provide the spotlight for Canada’s biggest single-day hockey celebration, as Sportsnet revealed tonight during Hockey Night in Canada that the 20th edition of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada will take place in Yellowknife on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020.
“Hockey is in our DNA,” said Rebecca Alty, Mayor of Yellowknife. “With many months of winter, Yellowknifers play hockey indoors in our top notch arenas, outdoors on the ice of Great Slave Lake and on many backyard rinks. Together with our partners, the Yellowknives Dene First Nation (YKDFN), we are thrilled to host the entire nation for Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada in February 2020. We look forward to celebrating the game we love and thank Sportsnet and Scotiabank for selecting our city.”
Canada’s annual hockey tradition gets underway on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020 as Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada will host an opening event to get the celebrations started. The four-day hockey festival will showcase community and family-friendly hockey events for all ages, all leading into the main event – the 12.5-hour broadcast on Sportsnet.

The festivities will centre around the event’s 20th anniversary, with an emphasis on Canada’s Great White North. Scotiabank Teammates Lanny McDonald, Cassie Campbell-Pascall and Darcy Tucker are scheduled to attend along with other special guests, including Sportsnet personalities. Somba K’e Park, Yellowknife’s favourite gathering place located on the shores of Frame Lake in front of City Hall, will provide the backdrop to the outdoor broadcast, complete with winter activities and community skating on the outdoor rink.
More details about the celebration and broadcast schedule will be announced in the coming months.
