– 12.5-hour national broadcast celebrates Canada’s national pastime, February 8 on Sportsnet –

TORONTO (June 1, 2019) The Northern Lights will provide the spotlight for Canada’s biggest single-day hockey celebration, as Sportsnet revealed tonight during Hockey Night in Canada that the 20th edition of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada will take place in Yellowknife on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020.

“Hockey is in our DNA,” said Rebecca Alty, Mayor of Yellowknife.  “With many months of winter, Yellowknifers play hockey indoors in our top notch arenas, outdoors on the ice of Great Slave Lake and on many backyard rinks.  Together with our partners, the Yellowknives Dene First Nation (YKDFN), we are thrilled to host the entire nation for Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada in February 2020.  We look forward to celebrating the game we love and thank Sportsnet and Scotiabank for selecting our city.”

Canada’s annual hockey tradition gets underway on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020 as Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada will host an opening event to get the celebrations started.  The four-day hockey festival will showcase community and family-friendly hockey events for all ages, all leading into the main event – the 12.5-hour broadcast on Sportsnet.

“Hockey is an important part of our country and to Scotiabank,” says Sloane Muldoon, Regional Senior Vice President, Prairie Region (which includes the Northwest Territories), Scotiabank. “It’s a game that brings together Canadians from coast-to-coast-to-coast. This year we are ecstatic to be bringing Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada to Yellowknife. Scotiabank is proud of our continued commitment to hockey and to have helped to support one million kids and counting through our involvement in kids’ community hockey. We look forward to bringing our love of hockey to Yellowknife in February.”

The festivities will centre around the event’s 20th anniversary, with an emphasis on Canada’s Great White North.  Scotiabank Teammates Lanny McDonald, Cassie Campbell-Pascall and Darcy Tucker are scheduled to attend along with other special guests, including Sportsnet personalities.  Somba K’e Park, Yellowknife’s favourite gathering place located on the shores of Frame Lake in front of City Hall, will provide the backdrop to the outdoor broadcast, complete with winter activities and community skating on the outdoor rink.

More details about the celebration and broadcast schedule will be announced in the coming months.

“The City of Yellowknife offers the perfect setting to anchor Sportsnet’s broadcast, as we mark the 20th anniversary of the event and celebrate Canada’s love for hockey with an emphasis on the North,” said Joel Darling, Executive Producer, NHL Special Events, Sportsnet.

Situated on the north shore of Great Slave Lake, just 400 kilometres south of the Artic Circle, Yellowknife is the capital city of the Northwest Territories and is located on Chief Drygeese Territory, the home of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation.

“The Yellowknives Dene First Nation is pleased to be a proud partner with the City of Yellowknife in hosting Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada 2020,” said Chief Edward Sangris. “Hockey runs through the veins our people. This exciting event will inspire our youth as it will all of Canada and provide an opportunity to showcase our culture and heritage to the rest of Canada. We thank the City of Yellowknife for pursuing this event and express our sincere gratitude to Sportsnet and Scotiabank for selecting the City of Yellowknife and the home of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation.”
