Moment #1: CHFI
In 1960, Ted Rogers bet big to launch Canada’s first FM station at a time when AM radio dominated, and only 5% of listeners had FM receivers. With one bold move, Ted changed the communications landscape forever.
Moment #2: CFTO
In 1961, while still a law student, Ted Rogers partnered with John Bassett, the Eaton family and John Alred to launch CFTO – Toronto’s first private TV station.Learn More
Moment #3: 680 AM
In 1962, Ted Rogers launched CHFI’s sister station, CHFI AM. The station would evolve with the times, from CHFI simulcast, to CFTR Top 40 hits, to its all-news 680NEWS format today – but getting here took a lot of fine tuning.Learn More
Moment #4: Rogers Cable
In 1967, Canada’s Centennial, there was a spirit of growth, of newness — and cable aligned with this spirit of innovation, connection, and Canadian pride. Ted Rogers believed the new technology would transform the television experience — and he was right.
Moment #5: First Call Centre
Through the late 1960s, Rogers Cable expanded at a rapid pace, growing its customer base tenfold every five or six months. With the July 1967 purchase of Bramalea Telecable Ltd. in Brampton, Rogers had its first customer call centre.Learn More
Moment #6: Moon Landing
In 1969, we hitched the Rogers name to a rocket and blasted into the future with a live public screening of the momentous moon landing at Nathan Phillip Square at Toronto’s city hall.
